As a nurse, I listen, I advocate, I learn and at times I take a step back and watch silently.
We are taught as nurses to care for our patients at all times, especially when they can’t or won’t fight for themselves. But the hardest fight we sometimes face is when we step back and let the patient go.
Yesterday, I watched as two patients made decisions that will forever change their lives. Decisions that could alter the lives of others as well. It’s never easy to watch when your told to always be in action for the welfare of others but your hands are tied because ultimately the patient has the right to make those decisions.
It’s never an easy road in nursing. We watch, we wait, we cry and everyday we come back again to serve others to the best of our ability so they can be better too.
