19 Years Later

It’s still burned into my memory what happened on September 11th. I’ll never forget that morning.

I was sleeping and my friend Darlene called and told me to get out of bed and turn on my TV because history was in the making. She wasn’t lying.

My oldest daughter, Chanda, was 2. We sat on the couch and watched as the second plane crashed into the tower. I saw people screaming, crying, jumping out of the burning buildings and then both towers crumbled to nothing. It was the most terrifying day of my life.

I remember the next 3 days after that were the quietest our skies had ever been. No air traffic at all. So eerie.

But I also remember the days that followed. All the heroes. Some wore badges and many didn’t. They were courageous in the aftermath. So many lives were saved through epic ways and the American Spirit was moving to see.

As long as I live I will always remember that day. That day that changed our country forever. I think this quote sums up best for me what I never want to forget.

“When Americans lend a hand to one another, nothing is impossible. We’re not about what happened on 9/11. We’re about what happened on 9/12.” ~ Jeff Parness
