When Your Body Revolts

Do you ever have a day that starts and you get the feeling that something is gonna happen? This Monday was that way for me.

It started off fairly normal. Kissed the kids and my husband goodbye as I left for work ( grumbling a little bit because the kids were off school, luckies). Everything was humming along smooth.

Then my body revolted. It was as if my stomach wanted to burst out of me into a million tiny pieces and the only thing holding it back was my skin. It came on minutes after lunch with no warning and no way for relief. I knew I needed help but I have to admit I hate leaving work in the middle of the day. I’m not trying to be tough I just hate leaving people without help.

Thankfully, my coworker had it under control and Urgent Care is just downstairs from our office, so I marched down there to find out what was going on. After blood draws, X-ray and well everything else come to find out I have an “Air Ileus”.

So what exactly is that? Well, it’s when your colon dilates full of air and then everything stops moving. In some cases, you vomit, have constipation and or diarrhea, pain is a definite and the list can continue. One thing that is a must is bowel rest. Meaning you go on a clear liquid diet for at least 24-48 hours. Giving your body the chance to correct the ileus on its own. If not, hospitalization and surgery can be in your future.

Luckily, for me, it only took a couple days of bowel rest and clear liquids for my body to right itself.

This whole ordeal has taught my a valuable lesson. Never take your health for granted because once it’s gone it’s hard to get it back.
