Yesterday we had our Mosaic all staff meeting. First time for me being there and it was quite the experience. Definitely not like other all staff experiences I’ve had. This was more dynamic, open and honest. It was a real treat. We even had a guest speaker.
I will not bore you with his whole speech since most would not appreciate all the medical jargon but there was a lot of good points. One of his best points of the whole speech, in my opinion, was “the pause.”
We all at times are overwhelmed and need to take a step back in our day to take a deep breath. Whether, it’s because we lost a patient, we get cut off in traffic, our kids are screaming for food and we just got home from work, etc.
Taking 15-20 seconds to just be silent and acknowledge that something has happened that we are going to be okay and then moving on. Studies have actually shown this helps people to function better in their daily lives.
It doesn’t take much time. Literally, 15-20 seconds to take a deep breath and acknowledge that whatever it/was sucked and move forward. It’s amazing we always say we never have enough time but we really do!!
I had the worst time today the moment I walked in the door and work today. Computer problems, patient issues and employee relations but the moment I took those blessed 20 seconds to pause and just breath and acknowledge the sucky moments and I will survive I was able to surge forward without an issue.
So listen to the nurse and start practicing the pause. You will never regret it. Promise.
