Nurses Need Help Too

About 10 years ago when Summit Health was still Bend Memorial Clinic (BMC) there was a float team that had a few RN’s on it. I was one of them and I was lucky enough to be one of the few who was not let go during their employee elimination phase.

I saw a lot of good people let go during that period and it was painful to watch. One of the RN’s let go was named Kristina. I didn’t know her well, but I liked her. She always had a smile for the patients she roomed and I just felt liked she cared for our patients like I did.

Roughly, 1-2 years after Kristina was let go from BMC we all heard she committed suicide. I don’t know if anyone at the clinic ever heard the full story of why she took her own life, but many people who knew her stated that she never really recovered after being let go from the clinic.

Sadly, after these last few months of my being let go from the clinic, I completely understand. I felt like I had a family there and in one day it was all taken away.

Nurses are trained to take care of others. We spend our careers looking out for others and creating bonds with the people and patients with we work with and when we lose our jobs and positions, we lose our identity. It’s hard to recover from those set backs.

Do I want to commit suicide? No, but I understand what eventually led Kristina to it. It’s a hard road to work back to a new position and gain trust in a new place.

We need to remember our nurses. They put their hearts and souls on the line daily for their patients and it’s not for a paycheck. It’s because they love what they do. They want to make a difference in the lives they touch.

So please remember the nurses in your life this Christmas. Your praise and love can make all the difference.
